Marlin Model 1897 Century Limited: Tribute to a Rimfire Icon

Few rifles in American firearms history carry the same enduring charm as Marlin’s lever-action rimfires. Originally introduced in 1897, the Marlin Model 1897 became a cornerstone for small-bore lever rifles. Shooters liked its reliability, accuracy and craftsmanship. A full century later, in 1997, Marlin Firearms released the 1897 Century Limited. This commemorative reissue honored both the original design and the company’s long-standing heritage.

This special edition rifle represents far more than nostalgia. It is a carefully curated celebration of a classic model, produced in limited numbers for those who appreciate the artistry of a bygone era.

A Collector’s Showcase

The 1897 Century Limited retains the hallmarks of its historic namesake. This includes a 24-inch octagonal barrel stamped with the desirable “JM” marking, a 22-round tubular magazine and Marlin’s trademark Micro-Groove rifling for superb accuracy. Its polished stainless receiver contrasts beautifully with the high-polished blued barrel. Also, factory engravings and gold inlays bearing the “Century Limited” designation and “One Hundred Years” text elevate the rifle from functional firearm to commemorative masterpiece. Even the serial number, which begins with “1897” as part of a custom run of numbers, pays tribute to the iconic model.

Fittingly, the left side of the receiver also bears a beautifully engraved and gold-inlaid portrait of the company’s founder and namesake: John Mahlon Marlin.

The stock is fashioned from hand-selected walnut, richly checkered at the pistol grip and capped with a crescent buttplate. This evokes the fit and finish of Marlin’s finest 19th-century rifles. Semi-buckhorn rear and blade front sights complete the traditional sight picture.

Untouched Condition

What makes this particular example in Collector’s Elite Auctions extraordinary is its untouched condition. The rifle has never been cycled or fired. The bolt face, chamber and lifter remain pristine, free of the faintest trace of wear. Even the checkering on the walnut stock retains the sharpness of its factory cut, un-dulled by handling.

This is not a rifle that lived its life in the field like so many of the original Model 1897 rifles. This one has been preserved, carefully stored since leaving the factory floor some 28 years ago. The result is a firearm in collector-grade, museum-quality condition.

The rifle is also accompanied by its original factory box and paperwork, making it a complete set and a time capsule of sorts. The box face also has great reproductions of historic Marlin imagery, ads and patent documents that trace the company’s long legacy.

Marlin Model 1897 Century Limited & Coveted

Fewer than 5,000 examples of the 1897 Century Limited were produced. Far fewer remain in such immaculate, unfired condition. As time passes, pristine specimens are increasingly held tightly by collectors who recognize both their scarcity and historical significance.

Now that the Marlin brand is owned and made by Ruger, this 1897 Century Limited is a tangible investment in Marlin’s legacy and history. Never again will a rifle like it be made. This is a rimfire lever-action that bridges past and present. However, this particular 1897 Century Limited is destined not for hard use in the field but for prominent placement in the curated collection of a serious enthusiast.
