There are few handguns as immediately recognizable and historically revered as the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless. This particular example, bearing serial number 351304, was manufactured in 1920. This places it firmly within the desirable Type III production run that spanned from 1910 to 1926. Chambered in .32 ACP and built with the precision and grace that marked Colt’s golden era of firearms manufacturing, this pistol stands as both a historical artifact and a collector’s gem. It is a perfect addition to the August Collection.
Originally introduced in 1903, the Colt Pocket Hammerless was the brainchild of legendary firearms designer John Browning. Despite the moniker “hammerless,” the pistol does indeed feature a hammer. It’s simply internal, allowing for a clean, snag-free draw from concealment. This internal mechanism contributed to the pistol’s reputation as an ideal option for discreet carry.
The Type III model brought subtle yet notable refinements over its predecessors. The most apparent was the deletion of the magazine disconnect safety, streamlining operation without sacrificing reliability or safety. The pistol’s design retained the grip safety and thumb safety, ensuring that Browning’s design continued to emphasize secure handling.
This 1920-manufactured example sports a 3.75-inch fixed barrel, utilizes blowback operation and comes with an 8-round magazine capacity. These are all features that made it a staple of early 20th century concealed-carry pistols. The .32 ACP cartridge, though mild by today’s standards, offered sufficient stopping power in a sleek, easily managed platform.
Collector’s Colt Model 1903
Cosmetically, this Model 1903 is a visual delight. Finished in Colt’s deep, polished blue and fitted with black checkered synthetic grips bearing the classic “Colt” banner and Rampant Colt logo. This pistol embodies the restrained elegance of early 20th century American handgun design. The profile is slim, balanced and smooth in every line; perfect for coat pocket, ladies’ purses or shoulder holster carry.
This particular pistol is in excellent overall condition, showing virtually no evidence of regular use or handling. Its finish remains rich and unmarred, and the mechanical integrity appears entirely intact. Adding even more appeal, it includes the original Colt box and accessories. Since cardboard and paper have a relatively low survival rate, these rare finds significantly boost this particular example’s value and collectability.
Whether admired for its historic pedigree, mechanical simplicity or sheer elegance, the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless Type III is a standout piece for any collector. Owning one is to hold a piece of American firearms history, straight from Collector’s Elite Auctions.
